Children can return to school with a mixture of emotions: excitement, nervousness, apprehension, anxiety, or joy, to name a few. Knowing what advice our children need when returning to school can be difficult. Yet above and beyond our encouragement, God’s Word holds the guidance, comfort, and promises they will need for every situation.
Whether your child is eager to return, uncertain of what to expect, or battling fears, you can confidently equip them with these back-to-school verses and songs.
Whether it’s first morning jitters or patterns of anxiety, God’s Word can give your child courage as they navigate lessons, relationships, and challenges. They can know God is with them, and they are never alone.
“The LORD Himself will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forget you. Don’t be afraid and don’t worry.” Deuteronomy 31:8
“So don’t worry, because I am with you. Don’t be afraid, because I am your God. I will make you strong and will help you; I will support you with My right hand that saves you.” Isaiah 41:10
“You go before me and follow me. You place Your hand of blessing on my head.” Psalm 139:5
“For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:17
Dear God, I do not need to be afraid because You already know what I will face. You are going before me, preparing me, and protecting me. Help me trade fear for bravery, knowing You never leave me.

Your child might be eager to return to lessons or be less than enthusiastic about their studies. Either way, as they return to school, you can remind them of the opportunities they have every day to grow in wisdom. You can help them understand that knowledge and wisdom are different. God wants us to always be learning and use that knowledge to live wisely in a way that pleases Him. Help your child build excitement in this wisdom pursuit, and chase after it like a treasure.
“Cry out for wisdom, and beg for understanding. Search for it like silver, and hunt for it like hidden treasure. Then you will understand respect for the LORD, and you will find that you know God. Only the LORD gives wisdom; He gives knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:3-6
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” James 1:5
“How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!” Proverbs 16:16
Dear God, help me learn new things daily about the world You have made. Help me gain knowledge and skills that will help me live out Your plans and purposes for my life. When I learn something new, please turn that lesson into wisdom so I will better know how to follow You and live well in this world.
Listen to Seek Ye First from Hidden In My Heart, Volume I
Whether your child attends a private school, public school, hybrid, or homeschool program, they will encounter opportunities to shine God’s light on those around them. You can remind them that God’s love is inside us, and others around us can see that love as we follow Jesus. We don’t need to perform. God never expects us to be perfect because Jesus paid the price for our mistakes. As we grow in Jesus, His love will be displayed in how we talk and interact with others.
“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
“You are the light that gives light to the world. A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden. And people don’t hide a light under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand so the light shines for all the people in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15
“Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:16
Dear God, help me to keep learning about You and following after You. As I do, please grow my heart to love You more and my mind to think the thoughts that You think. I pray that other students and even teachers around me will see light, joy, and peace. I want Your love to fill me up and overflow to others. Amen.
