If you picked a flower and held it between your fingers, you would likely recognize it immediately as a flower. But if you have never seen one or had it described to you, you might not know what you were holding. We recognize flowers by their petals, pollen, stems, and leaves. Similarly, the purest form of love can only be defined by God. Without an understanding of God, we cannot know love. Yet, just as examining a flower petal under a magnifying glass reveals its intricate details, studying God’s love allows us to become more aware of its depth and beauty.
We often think about God as loving, but how often do we consider the full depth and impact of His love? Apart from God, love cannot exist, for He is the very embodiment of love. As 1 John 4:8 says, “…God is love.” If we want to better understand love, we must first understand God, for God’s perfect love created us with the capacity to love. Here are 12 verses for reflecting on God’s perfect love.
God’s perfect love doesn’t stand on the sidelines. He is not a distant observer of our lives but actively enters into our circumstances. He never hesitates to sacrifice on our behalf. The greatest display of His sacrificial nature is the gift of His Son, Jesus, who died in our place to bear the punishment for our sins. As we hide God’s Word in our hearts, may we look for all the ways He sacrifices for us.
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2:4-5
“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
“And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:2
“He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32

Every human capacity has limits. We will never find perfect love in another person, relationship, or anything on earth. And yet, God’s perfect love is a beautiful example of limitless devotion. Through His power and Spirit, we can experience more of His boundless love and share it with those around us. There is no place His love cannot reach, and it never runs out. God’s perfect love finds us wherever we are and meets our deepest needs.
“Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds.” Psalm 36:5
“But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear Him, and His righteousness with their children’s children.” Psalm 103:17
“The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.’” Jeremiah 31:3
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

None of this would matter if God’s perfect love were out of reach. Yet, He richly lavishes His love upon us. By sacrificing His Son, He provided the only way for us to fully experience His love. We have complete access to God’s perfect love, which can transform how we engage with the world and interact with those around us.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!…” 1 John 3:1
“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” 1 John 4:16
“We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
“I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:16-19
