Whether you have experienced intermittent seasons of fitful sleep or chronic insomnia, interrupted rest can be debilitating. God created us to thrive within rhythms of rest, and when those patterns are disrupted, so are our attitudes, work, and relationships. Experience God’s refreshment with 3 Biblical practices for restful sleep…
What comes to mind when you think of meditation? While culture’s concept of meditation alludes to an emptying of one’s mind, we can redeem this notion and bring it back to its biblical context. When God calls us to meditate, He invites us to deeply study and contemplate His truth and promises in Scripture. Psalm 1:1-3 says the person who meditates on God’s Word day and night is “like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.”
When sleep evades you, picture yourself as a tree planted by the streams of God’s living waters. Soak up His truth as you pray through the following three Scriptures:
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
“I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.” Psalm 3:5
A second Biblical practice for restful sleep complements the first. As we meditate on God’s truth, we can listen to Scripture music to hide His Word deeper in our hearts and minds. Powerfully peaceful melodies help us internalize God’s promises and recall them throughout the night if we’re woken.

I am watching over you
Ever watching over you
With you through the night
And by the light of day
I am watching over you
Ever watching over you
Never will I sleep
You’re Mine to keep always

How often is your sleep disrupted simply because your mind refuses to quiet down? When life’s overwhelming demands consume our minds, we can find it nearly impossible to rest. Yet there is a resounding truth that equips us to take every thought captive: God delights in us. In Zephaniah 3:17, we read the following promise to the Israelites, revealing God’s heart for us, His children: “He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears.”
The next time you feel restless at night, use these 3 Biblical practices for restful sleep: meditate on God’s truth, internalize His promises through Scripture music, and reflect on His delight in you.
