Have you ever ridden a roller coaster and, despite seeing the track ahead and knowing where you’re going, gripped the handlebar in fear of what’s coming? Life can feel similar. Even when we know what we will endure, the lead-up can be frightening, and we can struggle in trusting God with the future.
Alternatively, life can feel like a trail through the woods. A well-marked path is easy to trust, but what about when trail signs are worn down or unclear? You might hesitate to continue or doubt a directional decision after the fact.
Whether you can see the way ahead and it’s shadowed in fear, or you’re struggling to understand which direction to turn, God tells us in Matthew 6:34, “Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself.” But what does it realistically mean to let tomorrow care for itself?
It is difficult to navigate or make a sound decision when fear is at the helm. If we want to trust God for tomorrow, we need to lay every uncertainty in His capable hands. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” When a fearful thought or concern over the future enters our minds, we can toss it aside and “take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). We can actively replace anxiety with the truth that God cares for us.
We often think of provisions as material means—in the most basic sense, food, shelter, and water. In our modern day, we might ask God to provide for things like a medical bill, school tuition, groceries, or a little breathing room in the budget. Yet God is well aware that our needs extend beyond physical requirements. We were created for an abundant life, and God knows we need wisdom, friendship and community, joy, comfort, and hope—and He wants to lavish these upon us. If we are anxious about an upcoming meeting, interview, or life change, we can trust God for the future, knowing He is already ahead of us, working out the details for our good and His glory.
When we read in 1 Peter 5:7 that we can cast our anxiety on Him because He cares for us, the Greek word for “care” communicates concern and attention. God does not overlook any desire of our hearts or needs. He has been planning to meet those needs since before time began.
We can see God’s attentiveness in Jesus’ words in Matthew 6 and 10 when He pointed to the birds of the air for lesson material. In Matthew 6:26, He said, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Later, in Matthew 10, Jesus taught how carefully God tends to sparrows. Verse 31 concludes, “Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” From hatching until it fledges and leaves the nest, one tiny house sparrow chick requires 3,000 to 4,000 insects. It is no small feat for the sparrow parents! Yet, at creation, God carefully planned entire ecosystems with plants and insects that they would need. How much more carefully, then, God has been planning for your provision since time’s beginning.
With anxieties cast aside and our focus on God’s faithfulness, we can confidently proceed with the power and help of God’s Spirit. When Jesus was nearing the end of His earthly ministry, He told His disciples this in John 14:26, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
The truth of God’s Spirit inside us arrests our fears concerning tomorrow. Consider again the birds of the air, many of which complete incredible migration journeys each year. How do they find their way? To take a wrong turn can mean a fatal expense of energy. Yet God has designed birds with an internal navigation system. Some scientists believe birds can even see the earth’s magnetic field, allowing them to find their way effectively and efficiently.
God’s Holy Spirit is our internal navigation system. As we hide God’s Word in our hearts, the Spirit helps us understand and apply truth to our present situations, replacing fear of the future with God’s powerful peace.
With His Spirit inside us, we can trust that “tomorrow will care for itself” because God is already there paving the way for us.
Take no thought for tomorrow
For tomorrow will take care of itself
Take no thought what you’ll eat or drink
Or what you’ll wear, you needn’t care
Take no thought for tomorrow
Know that God is watching over you
Your Heavenly Father knows what you need
So take no thought for tomorrow
Every little bird in the air His eye does follow
He is watching over them
How much more does your Father care for you, His child
His own child
