As children grow older, their understanding of love matures and develops. As parents or grandparents, we help shape their perception of what love means and looks like. We can point them back to the original definition of love, which is God Himself. 1 John 4:8 says, “…God is love.” As children better understand God by hiding His Word in their hearts and meeting God through prayer, they can glean deeper insight into God’s unconditional love for them.
God’s unconditional love differs from many worldly forms of affection or acceptance because His love is rooted in who He created us to be as His children. Psalm 139:14 says, “…I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.” You can remind your child that they do not need to try to gain God’s acceptance by changing who they are. Instead, as they let Jesus work in their hearts and minds, they will grow more and more into who God created them to be. God’s unconditional love is a part of who they are: wholly beloved by the Maker of the universe.

When your child feels lonely or afraid, you can remind them that God’s unconditional love never leaves us. As we saw in 1 John 4:8, God Himself is love, and He is never far. Hebrews 13:5-6 promises, “…For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’”
You can assure your child that God is always with us, and wherever God is, there is love.

As your child faces challenges and discouragements, you can remind them that while we go through hard things, God’s unconditional love has saved us for eternity. Explain to them that God is with us through every challenge, and we can think forward to when we will spend eternity in Heaven with Him. Like God’s unconditional love, our eternal salvation and security cannot be changed. When we accept and follow Jesus as our Savior, we are safe in Him. Read to your child John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Remind them that because God gave the greatest gift, His own Son, He will also provide us with everything we need here on earth, as Romans 8:32 says, “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?”

Every challenge, victory, and milestone is an opportunity to shape your child’s perspective and point them back to God’s unconditional love. Help them hide God’s Word in their hearts so they can always remember His truth and promises.
