Our regular disposition is not always one of thanksgiving. Remembering gratitude can be challenging when we’re up against everyday struggles and hardships or simply busy getting things done. Raising our heads above the frenzy and practicing intentional thanksgiving does not come naturally. Yet, as we anchor our gratefulness in God’s Word and Scripture music, we can create habits of praise that will last long after Thanksgiving week and become an invigorating and integral part of our lives.
God’s Word is full of reminders to, well, remember! As we look back on His faithfulness and promises, our hearts naturally fill with gratitude, which overflows, pours over, and permeates our attitudes and actions. Here are four songs and Scriptures to fill your heart with thanksgiving.
Deuteronomy 7:9 tells us, “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations.” In Hebrew, the word faithful means trustworthy, reliable, and established. Juxtaposing the feebleness of society, God’s Word can always be counted on. When everything around us feels uncertain, we can anchor our hope in God, who is steadfast and unchanging.
Trust in the Lord
You can trust Him
Lay your burdens down
Cast your cares on the One who cares for you
He will be your confidence
When you give it all
All to Him

We’re accustomed to making plans. We generally know what is happening on any given day, what appointments we must attend, and what needs to be accomplished. However, when those plans are disrupted, it often ruffles our peace and contentment. How can we preserve peace no matter what a day brings?
Philippians 4:6-7 offers a beautiful perspective to bring into each day: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” We can thank God who promises us peace beyond understanding — a peace that prevails and claims victory over uncertainty.
Don’t you worry about anything
Instead pray about everything
Tell God what you need
And thank Him for all He has done
And the peace of God
Far beyond what we can understand
Will guard your heart
And your mind in Christ Jesus

God is intimately acquainted with every emotion we feel and each challenge we face. He does not draw back but instead draws near to us. When He took on human form through Jesus on earth, He came near to us in a very physical way. Because He knows the human experience, He can be close to us through His Holy Spirit inside us and through His intercession on our behalf. Romans 8:34 attests to Jesus’ activity in our lives, “Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.”
Through the Holy Spirit and Jesus’ activity in our lives, we can experience God’s ever-present help. Hebrews 13:5-6 assures us, “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’”
When your sky is cold and lonely
And your heart is filled with fear
I will wrap My arms around you
Know that I am here
And I will keep you safe and sound
Through the darkness that surrounds
I will never leave you
Nor forsake you
Know that I am with you
You will never be alone

God’s desire is that we know Him. While we’ll never fully understand His ways on this side of eternity, He is generous with His revelation to us. God makes Himself known through His living and active Word, His Holy Spirit, and all He has made in creation. He brings us into a deeper understanding as we pursue Him. His voice might not often be audible, but as we seek Him, our spirits learn the voice of His Spirit, confirmed by His Word and beautifully portrayed in nature. We can thank God for the many creative and compelling ways in which His still, small voice speaks confidently into our lives.
I will seek You Lord
Search with all my heart till I find You
Waiting patiently
Longing for one word to breathe new life
Your words are life
I will listen, ever listen
For Your still small voice

Allow God’s Word to inform and direct your thanksgiving. Delight in His promises, character, and blessings, and thank Him for all He makes known to us. His living and active Scriptures will guide our gratitude as we hone a life of habitual thanksgiving.
