A family’s first days with a new baby should be filled with precious interactions and memories. However, for families in the NICU, this time is also marked by heartbreaking challenges. Yet studies are showing that an intentional introduction of music in the NICU can help in powerful ways:
Music benefits for NICU families make sense in light of God’s designs. As He wonderfully knits together a little one in their mother’s womb, He makes them in His image—and He is the inventor of music. Whether we consider ourselves musically inclined or not, each of us was created by the One who gave the birds their songs and wrote the first compositions and melodies.
In the Psalms and throughout Scripture, we discover music’s integral role in life. Music is an expression of God’s creativity and delivers His peace. In God’s Word, music often accompanies difficult times. It uniquely restores the listener. God uses music in a NICU room to strengthen a little one’s body, mind, and spirit while also ministering to the souls of weary parents, nurses, and doctors.
As God’s art, musical melodies are inherently good. However, when they carry timeless messages of God’s love, presence, and power, they are especially suited to make a profound difference in the NICU.
One NICU mother said this: “We listened to Scripture Lullabies for two months while our boy was in the NICU. It was a testimony to the nurses and other parents there. The music helped keep my heart calm during times of sadness. Here he is today. God’s perfect creation.”
As you pray over a little one in the NICU, let God’s Word guide your requests. His truth can inform your words and help you pray in line with His desires while remembering His promises set forth in Scripture.
