How can we define God’s indescribable peace? Without understanding what His peace looks like, can we truly know if we are experiencing it? Philippians 4:6-7 clarifies that some aspects of God’s peace are beyond our comprehension. In this passage, we read, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
The Greek word for surpasses is hyperechō, which means standing out and rising above. It is to excel and be superior. It is supreme and excellent. Put simply, God’s peace reflects His brilliant glory and makes any notions of this world’s peace pale in comparison.
Although we cannot fully comprehend God’s peace, Scripture makes certain characteristics plain so that we know when we encounter it. Here are three things the Bible tells us about God’s unique and unmatched peace…
Our hearts are often troubled and afraid because we cannot see around life’s next bend in the road. We do not know what is coming, and we’re anxiously gripped by unknowns. Yet Christ tells us that His peace is far greater than any earthly thing, and we do not need to be afraid. His peace overcomes.
In John 14:27, Jesus told His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Christ’s supernatural peace expands beyond any worldly limits or constraints. It cannot be contained or measured. It is far more capable than we can fathom.
Isaiah 26:3 says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”
As we already saw, God’s peace reflects His brilliant glory. God not only gives peace, He is peace. Ephesians 2:14 says, “For He Himself is our peace….” It is a steadfast characteristic of His nature. Because God is holy and perfect, so is His peace. As we practice living within His peace — always returning to His truth, presence, and promises — we discover an unbending, uncompromising, unchanging reality. While circumstances around us are fickle and flexing at the whims of society, God’s peace remains unscathed. We can always come back to His perfect, constant, permanent peace.
God’s peace not only calms life’s storms and reins in our anxious thoughts but also transforms us. In theology, being made more like Christ is called sanctification. Part of the sanctification journey is being ruled, governed, and led by God’s peace. Colossians 3:15 encourages us to “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts….” The Greek word for rule is brabeuō and means to control, decide, and determine. To allow God’s peace to rule in our hearts is not confining but liberating! His peace acts as a directional beacon. Life’s decisions no longer consume us with angst or anxiety. Instead, God’s indescribable peace guides us forward as we align every decision with His Word and bring everything to Him in prayer, as we read earlier in Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
We cannot fully define God’s peace because it is supernatural. Our best attempts to put it into words fall short. This is wonderful news because we will never reach the end of it. His peace is inexhaustible. As we practice living in His presence and allowing Him to change us, our souls grasp, little by little, His unworldly, perfect, and transformative peace.
