Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” God can accomplish far more than we can wrap our minds around. The One who wired our brains with incredible capacity can do far more than our minds can comprehend. But how can we experience those supernatural results in our lives? We can carefully inspect the promise of Ephesians 3:20 and discover how to pray in line with this powerful verse.
In Ephesians 3:20, we catch a glimpse of God’s lavish nature. He does not merely give us the minimum of what we need. Instead, He is generous in His provisions. The KJV says it this way: “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think….” God not only gives to us above and beyond what we ask but exceedingly abundantly above. The emphasis is on excess and abundance. If we struggle to believe God can or will do what we are asking for, we can be assured by this promise that He can do far more than we are asking. Although He might not answer our prayers exactly how we envision Him doing so, He is capable of meeting our needs, plus much more.
In the original Greek, the word translated as “abundantly” in the KJV or “more” in the NIV is ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ. It means “beyond all measure.” God can meet your needs and answer your prayers beyond all measure.
God could have chosen to do “immeasurably more” than we can ask or imagine from afar. He could impersonally meet our needs. Instead, He draws near and lets us experience His power deep inside our souls. He doesn’t only display His power in our circumstances but in the deepest parts of who we are. He wants to change the situations around us and the conditions in our hearts, minds, and souls.
We see this supernatural power two chapters earlier in Ephesians 1:19-20, which speaks of “The immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.”
The same power God used to raise Jesus from the dead is at work within us. And that power is described as “immeasurable.” God’s immeasurable power permeates our lives as He accomplishes immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine.
How, then, can we pray in line with the promise of Ephesians 3:20? First, we have confidence in our prayers as we know God can respond and provide above and beyond what we feel we need. We can boldly pray for God’s divine intervention in our circumstances and ask Him to perform what we cannot even begin to fathom. We can ask Him to leave us in awe and wonder at His solutions and strategies.
Secondly, we can watch expectantly for God’s power to be on display in our lives. Rather than only praying for a circumstance to change or a need to be met, we can ask with assurance to see God mightily working in and through us amid our circumstances. We can expect to experience His power in and around us as He does more than we can ask or imagine.
