In a world of constant change, we often feel anxious. Confidence melts and drips from our days as we live in uncertainty. We’re left raw and vulnerable to an onslaught of fear. Scripture music holds incredible power in every anxious moment to surround us with reminders of God’s unshifting promises. Why is Scripture music so powerful to calm anxieties and bring restful sleep? Because it is carried by the living, active, and enduring Word of God — truth insusceptible to change.
God uses many images to communicate the permanent nature of His character and Word, including rocks and mountains. The Moh’s scale is a tool used by geologists to determine the roughness of a rock or mineral. From 1 to 10, they measure how resistant a material is to scratching. Rocks — some of the hardest substances making up our planet — are susceptible to indentation and change. Scratched with a fingernail, some minerals will fall on the left side of the Moh’s scale between 1 and 2.5. A tougher mineral, requiring a drill bit to leave a mark, falls on the right side closer to 7 or 8. With this scale in mind, it’s incredible to consider how God uses rocks to prove the unchanging nature of His Word.
Considering the most enormous heaps of rocks we can find — mountains outlining horizons across the map — we presume them to be solid and steady. We use them as visuals for that which is dependable and unchanging. Yet, we find in God’s Word a different representation. In Nahum 1:5, we read, “Mountains quake because of Him, and the hills come apart.” Psalm 97:5 says, “The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord.”
Even the steadiest of things we can picture on earth are vulnerable to change. Yet God uses this to show us just how unshifting and eternal His love for us is! Isaiah 54:10 promises, “‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet My unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor My covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” God’s unchanging nature and everlasting love would never register on the Moh’s scale. It is without a scratch — composed of materials tougher than anything in creation. Scripture Music harnesses the dependable and steady constants we discover in the Bible and sings them over us, silencing every anxious thought.
In Psalm 90:2, we gain a clear picture of God’s timeless nature, “Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God.”
Through the power of Scripture music, we can hide God’s Word in our hearts. It will be our unshakable foundation in unsteady times and our assurance for future days. His Word never changes, melts, quakes, shifts, or collapses. As Matthew 24:35 assures us, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.”
