Where we live and raise our families is a sacred space. We can experience God’s presence and watch Him actively at work in our homes by praying Scripture — the living and active Word of God — over every space we inhabit.
In a prelude to the Ten Commandments, Moses gave the Israelites instructions concerning God’s words to His children. Moses told them in Deuteronomy 6:9, “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” One approach to this is praying Scripture over our homes. We can invite God’s power and presence into the places we dwell with our families. With Scripture music, we can fill our homes with a constant refrain of God’s promises.
Every parent knows the shock and surprise of the first time they hear their child lie. Because we are born into sin, lying comes naturally. However, it is also a practiced habit. Left unchecked, it can grow into a disease spreading throughout our homes and eroding trust. However, through prayer and God’s Word, we have the power to cut lies off at their roots. Luke 12:2 says, “Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.” You can pray for illuminating truth in your home.
Dear Lord, let no lies live in our home. If there is a lie festering, let it cause such discomfort that it must be brought to light. May we not suffer under the burden of sin and dishonesty, but free us by Your light and truth. Help us be patient and forgiving with one another and practice habits of truth in this space where we dwell side-by-side.
Home is not merely a place you reconvene as a family at a few points throughout the day or week. It is much more than that. A home is meant to be a refuge — a place you return to be replenished and protected. Our families encounter a lot of hard things in the world. Our children are growing up in a challenging and confusing society. Yet, we can create a space of peace and calm where our families enjoy coming back to because it is life-giving. Home should bring about a deep, contented sigh at the end of a long day. It can be a place where our thoughts are sorted and centered, our spirits recalibrated, and our bodies find rest.
1 Peter 5:10 says, “And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” Ask God to make your home a place where He actively makes your family strong, firm, and steadfast.
Dear Lord, fill our home with Your restorative powers. May this be a place to where each member of my family wants to return. Show me how to set it up in practical ways as a refuge. More than furnishings and decor, however, Lord, we need Your presence. You know what each one of us faces outside these walls. Let this be a place of healing and strength.
A home is like an ecosystem. It can be dialed in and thriving when operating as it is meant to — but it can also be fragile and easily broken. Abiding in Christ, we experience deep contentment and flourish in the abundant life He has for us. We can invite God’s joy and unity into our homes. When Jesus spoke to His followers about living in and for Him, He gave this reasoning in John 15:11, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” God wants us to have complete joy in Him! His desire is that our homes thrive by His Word and Spirit.
The distractions of this world want to divert our attention from God’s joy. Often, when His joy and accompanying contentment are lacking, it’s because this world’s empty promises have crowded out God’s best for us. 1 Chronicles 16:26-27 says, “For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and joy are in His place.”
Dear Lord, don’t allow the world’s empty promises to steal my family’s attention. We don’t want the world’s idols. Let our home be a place where we are constantly reminded of all that is lovely and true. As we abide in Your Word and ways, fill us with lasting contentment and abundant joy! May guests walk into our home and immediately sense Your presence and delight.
When we pray Scripture, we’re aligning our requests with God’s heart. This is a powerful force in our homes! Over time, we’ll witness Him answering requests we’ve faithfully filled our homes with over the years. Play “Hidden In My Heart” Scripture Music as a powerful and peaceful soundtrack of God’s faithful promises.
