Courageous faith is a powerful theme throughout the Bible, but what does it look like? Picture a grove of trees with roots winding together beneath the surface. Aspen trees are a perfect example, as each individual tree is a part of one living organism. Now think of God’s invitations and commands in the Bible to “Fear not.” These words and others like them sprout up like trees throughout the Biblical text, yet they are all interconnected, like a solid and resilient root system. When God tells us not to be afraid, it is not a standalone sentiment but instead supported by His unchanging character and promises throughout Scripture.
Living unafraid in today’s society may seem daunting, but we can find solace in the fact that the God who inspired the writers of the Bible to record these words is the same God who is with us today. He foresaw the challenges we would face in our families, culture, politics, health, and spiritual warfare. Yet, He remains steadfast, and His words are a beacon of hope and assurance in an ever-changing world.
God’s presence casts out fear. Colossians 3:17 says, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Fear is disarmed as we remain near Him through prayer and by hiding His Word in our hearts. God’s nearness brings truth that subdues lies and reminds us of His powerful promises to protect and guide us. As we draw near Him, we can perceive His attentiveness in our lives and where He powerfully intervenes to guard our hearts, minds, and bodies. We can accept God’s invitation to “Fear not” as we continuously return to and remain in His presence.
“Do not fear, for I am with you;
Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

God offers supernatural peace far more powerful than any worldly force or influence. No matter how daunting and out-of-control a circumstance might appear, God’s indescribable peace can fill, influence, and permeate your heart and mind. His peace is perfect, never failing or coming up short. Remember that every fear and anxiety is born from a broken or fragmented thought or circumstance—yet God is whole and holy. His perfect peace repairs and restores what is broken in our minds, hearts, relationships, and world. Ask Him to help you experience His indescribable peace like never before as you step out of fear and into His restful presence.
“You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.
Trust in the LORD forever,
For in YAH, the LORD, is everlasting strength.” Isaiah 26:3-4

God’s children faced unthinkable circumstances throughout Scripture. They endured hardships and persecution similar to and beyond some of our situations. Yet throughout the Bible, we see God showing up time and again for His children, and we can trust that He is doing the same today. Malachi 3:6 says, “I the LORD do not change.” We can hold to the promise of Psalm 100:5, “For the LORD is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.”
Our good, loving, and faithful God is the same God who divided the Red Sea, toppled the walls of Jericho, and rescued Daniel from the mouths of lions. We need not fear because He has not changed.
