Practicing Peaceful Pauses Throughout the Day

As we move throughout our days, anxiety and panic can become regular reactions. When circumstances unexpectedly change, we can be jolted away from God’s peace and become narrow-sighted, focused on what’s immediately before us rather than lifting our gaze heavenward. God never intends us to live reactively but rather to remain steadfast and confident in His presence. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

We can maintain a sound mind while practicing peaceful pauses throughout the day.

Maintain a Calm Pace Through Peaceful Pauses

Jesus was never in a rush. Looking at how He lived while on earth, we can notice His calm demeanor and unhurried cadence. Indeed, as God, He operated on a timeline we cannot see. He was not rushed because He was aware of His own perfect timing. Our reality is different—we cannot know the future, and we often struggle to move on from what has passed. History and an uncertain future can leave us anxious or hastily trying to orchestrate and control circumstances. Yet we can avoid frenzied living and move through our days calmly as we practice pausing with God between activities.

Instead of rushing from one thing to the next, leave a margin of five or ten minutes between tasks or events to sit with God. Turn to Him in prayer. Thank Him for something in the previous hour, and ask Him to guide you into the next. Take a short walk, take a deep breath, and remember the God of the universe is on your side.

Placing a Peaceful Pause Before Panic

Unexpected circumstances can easily derail a day. One phone call, text, or email message can undo our best efforts to remain calm and collected. However, we can create a habit of pausing before we react to a situation. When a hurtful word is said or a disappointing message arrives, we can stop before responding. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”

God wants to help us avoid panic and alarm. Rather than quickly reacting, we can collect our thoughts, turn them to God, and ask for wisdom. James 1:5 promises, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

5 Scriptures to Help You Practice Peaceful Pauses

Write the following five peaceful Scriptures somewhere you will see them often. Meditate on them throughout the day and commit them to memory. Use these Scriptures to help you practice peaceful pauses throughout your day.

“Be still, and know that I am God…” Psalm 46:10

“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him…” Psalm 37:7

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

“I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.” Psalm 91:2
