It is often said that Christ is our cornerstone, but what does that mean? What role does a cornerstone serve? In architecture, a cornerstone is the first stone laid and the reference point for everything that comes after. Everything else will be strong and stable if a cornerstone is set correctly.
What is our foundation as we build our lives, including careers, ministries, marriages, families, hobbies, and every endeavor? What is everything built upon? Cornerstones are never haphazardly laid. Instead, builders give extra time and great attention to detail to ensure the right cornerstone is perfectly laid so that nothing after it will be crooked or weak.
By choosing Christ as the cornerstone of our lives, everything is built upon His perfection and power. We have a guiding principle for our lives that we can depend on.
Although Christ is eternal, He’s called the firstborn of all creation. He is the cornerstone for everything He and the Father dreamed up at the beginning of time. Everything He made, including us, reflects His glory and depends on His care.
Colossians 1:15-17 explains:
“He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
Like a cornerstone upholding a building, Jesus is before all things, and in Him, everything holds together — including our lives.
Can you imagine a builder inspecting options for cornerstones and passing over the strongest, most beautiful, and most suitable cornerstone and choosing something inferior? This is what happened to Jesus. Mark 12:10 says, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” The very ones Jesus came to save rejected Him. If we’re not careful, we do the same. Our rejection might not be as blatant as what Jesus endured while on earth. But how often do we pass over Him and choose a lesser cornerstone to depend on?
If we do not align our desires with Jesus, we may build our lives on a crooked or weak foundation. What looks like a tiny shift leads to a dramatic change in direction. One crooked cornerstone makes an entire building weak and vulnerable. Ephesians 4:14 warns us to “no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” We can avoid falsehood, schemes, and confusion by placing Jesus at the center of our lives and leaning into His every word.
Positioning Jesus as our cornerstone may mean that we, too, will face rejection. But we must remember that the rejected cornerstone was also the perfect cornerstone. Let us not be builders rejecting Jesus but instead choosing to establish our lives upon His firm foundation.
Around 700 years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah spoke of a promised cornerstone. Isaiah 28:16 explains, “So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.’” Reflecting on this prophecy, 1 Peter 2:6 says those who trust this perfect cornerstone “will never be put to shame.” While society may reject Him, and we might share in that rejection, we will never be put to shame with Christ as our cornerstone. He is the promised and perfect cornerstone holding our lives together.
