Have you ever wondered if a dream in your heart is from God? Maybe it’s a business idea you can’t shake from your mind, a ministry plan that excites your spirit, or a desire for your family. God designed us to flourish through personal growth, creativity, progress, and seeing beautiful things come to fruition.
We can see this in God’s original design. He never intended the splendor of the Garden of Eden to remain in one place but for the beauty and healthfulness of the plants, animals, and humans to spread and fill the earth. God has big plans and purposes; we are created in His image to do likewise.
Yet we can struggle to know if what we’re dreaming about is something God is also dreaming for us. Sometimes, our dreams can create discontent in our minds and souls as we wait for results.
Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” We can see it’s good to have desires in our hearts. Yet Psalm 23:1 says, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
What might it look like to courageously pursue the longings of our hearts while not succumbing to discontent?
Psalm 37:4 states that as we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our hearts. As we find our joy in Christ, our aspirations match His. Verse five continues: “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will act.
God loves us too much to simply give us whatever we want. Instead, He shapes our hearts and desires to reflect His own. In Ezekiel 36:26, God told the Israelites, “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” God makes the same promise to us. He removes our hard, stubborn hearts and gives us new, soft hearts that want to please Him. In this exchange, our old desires fade, and what God wants for us becomes the focus of our thoughts and energy.
Dear Lord, You know my ambitions. You have created me wonderfully with unique talents, skills, and gifts. I want to use those for Your glory. If any desire in my heart is not from You, make that plain to me. Shape my heart every day to be more like Yours.

In God’s perfect design, we were created to want the right things in the perfect portion and to find them in Christ. Yet, in a world broken by sin, we can experience our desires, even godly ones, creating discontent. We might question if God truly knows what is best for us or if we should trust His timeline. We understand that He created us with passions and the desire to enjoy purposeful work, but how can we reconcile those desires with an “I shall not want” mentality in Psalm 23? Verses one through three say:
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for His name’s sake.”
When we struggle with discontent, it’s often because we’re searching for meaning in the work or dream itself rather than in the God who created us for it. But we can find freedom as we release our dreams and surrender them to God’s bigger plan. We do not have to suffer from want because God leads us to green pastures and still waters. Rather than the dream providing for us, He does. And it is He that restores us, and all for His name’s sake.
Dear Lord, You are more than enough for me. Help me not to seek worth, value, or accolades in my dream or work but instead to find everything I need in who You are. You provide above and beyond, yet You generously give me exciting pursuits to follow. Lead me to green pastures and still waters, and restore my soul for Your name’s sake.

We can dare to dream and courageously pursue God’s big plans for our lives. Ephesians 2:10 assures us, “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
God created you with important dreams. He was planting those aspirations long before you were born. As you trust Him with those desires, He will help you pursue meaningful endeavors at His pace, by His power, and for His glory, all while remaining content in Him.
