God’s love runs far deeper, reaches far higher, and stretches far wider than we can ever comprehend. Consider this: the observable universe is estimated at 93 billion light-years in diameter. However, it’s inconceivably larger because we have no tools capable of seeing or measuring its vastness. God’s love for us is even greater than the universe’s expanse. It is beyond measure or comprehension. And yet, when God Himself came to earth as baby Jesus, we get the clearest glimpse in history of His magnificent, unmeasurable love.
God displayed His unconditional love for us when He sent Jesus while we were undeserving. Romans 5:6 says, “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.” We did nothing and, in fact, can do nothing to earn God’s love. Instead, He freely gives it to us, as verse 8 declares, “But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
If you are doubting God’s love for you, reflect on the gift of His only Son. Remember His unconditional love that came to us when we were yet helpless. Reflect on His love portrayed in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
God’s gift of His only Son, Jesus, fulfills His promise and plan to restore us and give us hope for eternity. In Romans 5:6 above, we read that Christ came “at just the right time.” His arrival, death, and resurrection were timely realizations of God’s perfect plan.
In Acts 2:23, we read about Jesus’ death, described as happening “according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God.” This plan, a manifestation of God’s unmeasurable love, is meticulously carried out, playing out in history and rippling into our lives and forward into eternity.
God did not choose the easiest route to save us. He carried out the only plan sufficient for our rescue, which required the sacrifice of His Son. Because Jesus is God and is perfect, He was the only sacrifice sufficient to take our punishment. He was the only one qualified. 1 Peter 1:19 tells us about the “precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.”
Jesus was the only solution. He is the way, the truth, and the life—the only way back to God. God showed His love by giving us the hardest gift to give. Because He did, we can be saved and secure for eternity with God. Hebrews 10:12 assures us, “Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins…” and verse 10 confirms, “We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Although we cannot measure God’s love, we can begin to comprehend it as we reflect on the unconditional, promised, and sufficient gift of Jesus. As Ephesians 3:18-19 says, may we “have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
For God so loved the world
He gave His one and only son
That whosoever believes in Him
They will not perish
They will have everlasting life
He loves us
God loves us more than we could know
He loves us
He gave His son
Jesus would come
To give it all
No greater love
God so loved
God so loved
