Have you ever observed a plant developing from a seed to its first shoot with leaves? If you garden, you might be familiar with this process. It is predictable and expected, yet always exciting and full of hope. God created this process as a beautiful visual of new life. In the first roots, shoots, and leaves, we perceive a Creator who has carefully designed plants and likewise has a detailed plan for the maturation of our faith.
A seed is full of potential when it is tucked beneath the soil. Consider an orchid. It begins as the smallest seed on earth—the size of a speck of dust—yet produces magnificently beautiful flowers. However, seeds require proper conditions to germinate. When the temperature is correct, and water soaks into the seed expanding its cells inside—like a sponge soaking up moisture—it sends a single root downward. It might not seem like much, but this first root becomes the anchor of a plant that will grow much larger.
Our faith begins similarly. Inside each of us is tucked an innate knowledge of our Creator God. Romans 1:20 says, “For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” We have an inner knowledge of God, and He works to align the conditions around us—warming our spirits to His truth and consistently watering our hearts and minds with His living Word. As we choose to surrender our lives to Him, a root of faith is established, and growth begins.
After a seed sends down its first root, it develops a first shoot that stretches upward and presses out of the soil. This is the first part of the plant that can be seen above ground. The plant must send this first shoot up quickly because it can now begin to photosynthesize, capturing energy from sunlight and turning it into the plant’s food. With an energy source, more roots and stems can now be developed.
Likewise, once our faith is rooted in Christ, we often experience a quick season of growth. Everything is new and exciting. We must position ourselves in God’s light to keep maturing and flourishing. God didn’t only create light—such as the sun that shines down and provides energy for plants—He is light. 1 John 1:5 says, “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.” John 1:4-5 says, “In Him (Jesus) was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
At this early point in faith, everything might seem unfamiliar. God is actively helping us discard old behaviors, habits, and thought patterns as we learn to follow Him. As we practice remaining in God’s light, we experience new life and unprecedented growth.
With a developing root system as an anchor and a first shoot soaking up the sunshine, a plant unfurls its first leaves. These are not true leaves but a leaf-like structure tucked inside the seed called cotyledon. These first “leaves” provide more surface space for the plant to absorb the sun’s energy—like an individual solar panel—so it can grow more consistently and efficiently, soon developing true leaves and developing in earnest.
Faith matures as we bring more of our lives and daily experiences into God’s light. We can create more surface space to soak in His goodness and truth as we embrace fellowship with other believers and practice hiding His Word in our hearts.
As we spend more and more time in God’s light through spiritual practices such as prayer, silence, Bible study, and community, we experience growth only God can bring. 2 Peter 3:18 encourages us to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Perhaps you have been following Jesus for years and experienced the first roots, shoots, and leaves of faith long ago. Maturing in faith is a life-long process, and our trust and dependence on God grow more resilient as we consistently strengthen our faith roots.
Consider a perennial plant that endures the cold of winter and, come spring, sends out new shoots. These plants return stronger and more beautiful than the year before—but only as they diligently soak up sunshine, water, and nutrients during the growing season and bolster their root system.
God invites us into the ongoing work of nurturing our faith. We develop resilient faith as we receive everything we need from Him and plunge our roots deeper into His grace, goodness, and glory. Colossians 2:6-7 says, “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
