It is fitting that Mother’s Day marks the beginning of the growing season. So many gardeners wait eagerly for this mid-May Sunday when it’s finally warm enough to place plants into the soil. Spring’s bounty of colors, aromas, and textures beautifully reflects the growth God brings forth in a family. Just like gardening, motherhood can be messy and challenging, but God is the bringer of new life. As flowers poke through the soil each spring like clockwork, God infuses our hearts and homes with life and reminds us of His faithful provision and care.
God values the work of motherhood. When He sent His Son to earth to save us, He did so through a stunning story of motherhood. Thinking of Mary carrying, laboring, and raising Jesus, we understand God has an incredible role for moms and that this challenging work is Kingdom work that He blesses.
“Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be firm, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:58
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
“Let the favor of the LORD our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!” Psalm 90:17

One of the enemy’s tactics is to rob mothers of their peace, and he has a lot to work with these days. Around every corner, there seems to be a news or media story or personal experience threatening our peace. And yet, God’s peace is available, sufficient, and perfect! It is the only capable defense against the unrest of this world. When a mother operates from God’s place of peace, she can face whatever comes to her and her children’s days.
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, For in YAH, the LORD, is everlasting strength.” Isaiah 26:3-4
“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace…” 1 Corinthians 14:33
“The LORD will give strength to His people; the LORD will bless His people with peace.” Psalm 29:11

God’s hope is not wishful thinking — it is assurance. While it’s difficult to be faithful in the day-to-day work of motherhood when you cannot see the complete picture or outcome, you can rest confidently knowing God will not let your labor be in vain. God’s hope is steadfast in every challenge, heartache, and uncertainty. Like an anchor, His hope can steady you in every storm.
“…we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul…” Hebrews 6:18-19
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Romans 15:13

The sun climbs over the horizon each morning, and flowers unfold as a stunning reminder of a God who created, sustains, and holds all things together in nature and motherhood. Watching dawn’s procession, we can reflect on Lamentations 3:22-23:
“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
