Have you ever wondered what blessings God is working out through hardship? By His nature, God is redeeming. We can see Him making things new ever since sin cursed the earth. Surrounding Adam and Eve’s broken hearts, thorns choking Eden’s beauty, and earth carrying the burden of brokenness, God whispered His promise to mend what was shattered. Revelation 21:5 declares, “Behold, I am making all things new.” One day, God will restore the perfection and splendor of His creation. Presently, we can glimpse His powerful renewal in our lives. In Revelation 21:5, the Greek word for “new” is kainos, meaning “novel, unprecedented, and fresh.” God can accomplish extraordinary marvels in our stories. In Ephesians 3:20, we read that He is “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” God does not withhold His power from us but instead brings it straight into our circumstances to achieve far beyond anything we can anticipate.
We can hold to God’s promise of making all things new when facing adversity. God doesn’t let our hardships go to waste but desires to grow us through each challenge. He often uses the very thing we would rather wish away to bring unmatched beauty to our character. He gave us a beautiful image of this process when He designed pearls in the ocean.
A pearl holds incredible value and unique, one-of-a-kind elegance, yet it begins as a problem. When an irritant such as a grain of sand embeds itself in a creature like a scallop or oyster, the animal starts to coat the intruding particle with layers of shell called mother of pearl. Over time, the shell layers build up and create a stunning pearl.
How might God use what feels like an irritant or obstacle to produce something of unmatched beauty and significance? God can take what feels pointless or bothersome to shape and form your spirit. Romans 5:3-5 says, “we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
God’s transformation and development of our spirit is a life-long process. Just as a pearl doesn’t form overnight but can take years and even decades, God is patiently shaping us in His perfect timing. We can trust His process and that He has a wonderful plan.
God can also use life’s difficulties to equip us to minister to others. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” As you endure hardship, embrace God’s comfort and consider how He might prepare you to bring His perfect love into another person’s trial. You can be a testimony of God’s faithfulness. Perhaps someone in need of assurance will see your life and, in it, evidence of the God who works all things out for our good and His glory.
